# Don’t Let Slips and Falls Haunt Your Workplace This Halloween

Halloween brings plenty of planned scares. A slip in the employee parking lot shouldn’t be one of them.

For safety managers, late October is a useful reminder to look beyond the decorations and check the walking conditions employees encounter every day. Wet leaves, dark walkways, rain-soaked entrances, and early freezing temperatures can create hazards before winter officially arrives.

![Ghostly hazard check in the fleet yard](https://blog.winterwalking.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Ghostly%20hazard%20check%20in%20the%20fleet%20yard.png?width=1671&height=941&name=Ghostly%20hazard%20check%20in%20the%20fleet%20yard.png)

Use Halloween as an opportunity to uncover those hazards—and prepare your crew for ice cleat season.

---

## 1\. Unmask the Hazards Hiding Underfoot

A sidewalk covered in leaves may look seasonal, but it can also hide uneven pavement, curbs, and other obstacles. When leaves get wet, they can make walking surfaces slippery.

Start with the routes employees actually use:

- Parking lots and employee entrances.
- Outdoor stairs, ramps, and sidewalks.
- Paths between buildings.
- Loading areas and fleet parking spaces.
- Shortcuts across grass or untreated surfaces.

Remove accumulated leaves and debris, address damaged surfaces, and make designated walking routes clear. Encourage employees to report hazards and near misses so your team can address trouble spots early.

**Halloween safety reminder:** The hazards you can’t easily see deserve a closer look.

## 2\. Bring Dark Walkways Out of the Shadows

Employees arriving before sunrise or leaving after sunset need enough light to see where they’re stepping.

Walk your facility during the hours your crews arrive and depart. A route that looks fine at lunchtime may be difficult to navigate in the dark.

Check for burned-out fixtures, poorly lit stairs, shadows around entrances, and areas where parked vehicles block lighting. Keep decorations and temporary displays away from walking routes, emergency exits, and safety equipment.

For employees working around moving vehicles, review visibility requirements and make sure seasonal clothing or costumes do not interfere with required PPE.

---

## 3\. Watch for the First Freeze

Your winter safety plan needs to be ready before the first icy morning.

Review forecasts when freezing temperatures are possible, and assign responsibility for checking exposed walking surfaces before employees arrive. Pay particular attention to shaded areas, outdoor steps, and locations where water collects.

Make sure your team knows:

- Who inspects and treats walking routes.
- How employees report slippery conditions.
- Which alternate routes to use when an area is unsafe.
- Where ice cleats are stored and how to obtain them.

OSHA recommends promptly clearing snow and ice from walking surfaces and applying deicer after winter storms. It also advises appropriate footwear and shorter, slower steps when walking on snow or ice is unavoidable.

**Halloween safety reminder:** Don’t wait for a winter “surprise” to find out your supplies are missing.

---

## 4\. Keep Slippery Conditions From Following Employees Inside

Rain, wet leaves, and melting snow can travel through the front door on employees’ footwear.

Include entrances in your seasonal inspections. Check that mats lie flat, stay in place, and receive attention when saturated. Keep a clear process for cleaning tracked-in moisture and addressing wet floors promptly.

Also review how employees move between outdoor and indoor work. Someone entering a warehouse repeatedly has different traction needs from someone spending most of a shift outdoors.

Winter Walking’s Transitional Traction® ice cleats are designed for frequent indoor/outdoor movement and driving. Select the appropriate model for the employee’s tasks, footwear, and walking surfaces, and follow its use instructions.

---

## 5\. Don’t Let Your Ice Cleats Become Ghosts in a Supply Closet

Ice cleats need to be accessible when conditions call for them.

Before the first winter event, check your inventory and have employees inspect existing pairs for wear, damage, missing traction elements, and fit. Replace worn or damaged ice cleats according to the manufacturer’s guidance.

Give employees an opportunity to practice putting them on and taking them off while conditions are dry. Review when to wear them, where to store them, and any restrictions involving indoor surfaces, driving, or other job tasks.

Ice cleats support a broader slip prevention program that includes surface maintenance, inspections, training, and prompt hazard correction.

---

## A Five-Minute Halloween Toolbox Talk

Turn your next safety meeting into a quick workplace “hazard hunt.”

Ask your crew:

1. Where have you noticed slippery surfaces or poor lighting?
2. Which entrance or walking route needs attention before winter?
3. Do you know how to report an icy area?
4. Are your ice cleats accessible and in usable condition?
5. Do you understand when and where to wear them?

Assign someone to follow up on each issue. Employee observations are most useful when they lead to a visible fix.

---

## Keep the Scares in the Decorations

Halloween is a timely reminder to check the small details that can affect your crew’s footing: a dark stairway, a leaf-covered sidewalk, a wet entrance, or ice cleats that need replacing.

Address those details now so employees are better prepared when winter conditions arrive.
