Weather Madness Winter Weather Forecast. During an El Niño event, the southern half of the country may experience increased precipitation, although not all regions will witness cold enough temperatures for this moisture to transform into snow. Notably, during El Niño winters, elevated regions in the West, such as the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and the southern section of the Rocky Mountains, tend to receive additional snowfall. Conversely, regions like the Great Lakes, portions of New England, the northern Rockies, and the Pacific Northwest generally encounter reduced snowfall levels in the presence of an El Niño winter.
